Evaporative Air Cooler Maintenance: Honeycomb Pad Cleaning & Water Treatment

In Malaysia’s warm tropical climate, evaporative air cooler maintenance is the single most critical factor determining cooling performance, energy efficiency, and equipment longevity. A well-maintained industrial cooler delivers a consistent 4°C to 10°C temperature drop, but mineral scale, airborne dust, and neglected water tanks can quickly degrade efficiency—reducing airflow and causing unpleasant odors.

The Cost of Neglected Maintenance:
When cellulose honeycomb cooling pads become clogged with mineral deposits and industrial airborne particulates, water saturation drops by over 50%. This forces the fan motor to work against high static pressure while delivering barely a 1°C to 2°C temperature drop—wasting electrical power and shortening motor life.

Why Honeycomb Cooling Pads Scale in Malaysian Facilities

Most commercial evaporative air coolers use high-density cellulose honeycomb pads (often referred to as Celdek or Munters-style flute media). These pads feature cross-corrugated channels engineered to maximize contact area between flowing water and passing air.

As pure water evaporates into the air stream, calcium, magnesium, and dissolved mineral solids remain behind in the sump. Over weeks of continuous operation without regular water purging:

  • Mineral Calcification: Hard water deposits create white, crusty scale that chokes pad flutes, choking air intake.
  • Algae and Biofilm: Stagnant water left in uncleaned basins under warm Malaysian weather breeds algae, resulting in a musty or stale smell.
  • Airborne Dust Accumulation: In metalworking, packaging, and woodworking plants, ambient dust particles adhere to wet pad surfaces, turning mineral scale into a dense sludge.

Understanding how evaporative cooling works reinforces why continuous water fresh-flow and routine descaling are essential for sustained airflow.

Step-by-Step Honeycomb Pad Cleaning & Descaling Guide

Follow this procedure every 4 to 6 weeks for industrial production coolers, or prior to storing seasonal rental units:

1

Isolate Power and Drain Sump Water

Always turn off the main circuit breaker or unplug the unit before opening access panels. Open the bottom drain valve or pull the sump drain plug to completely evacuate stagnant water from the basin.

2

Carefully Remove Pad Retainer Frames

Unclip the exterior louvers and pad holding brackets. Slide each honeycomb pad out gently. Cellulose pads become fragile when wet—never yank or bend the media.

3

Low-Pressure Flush & Soft-Bristle Brushing

Use a standard low-pressure garden hose (never use a high-pressure jet washer, which will permanently disintegrate cellulose flute walls). Direct the water stream from the inside of the pad outward to flush accumulated dust out the front. Gently brush surface scale away using a soft-bristled nylon brush.

4

Mild Descaling Treatment (For Heavy Mineral Scale)

If hard water deposits have hardened on the media, soak the pads in a mild solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts warm water for 20–30 minutes. Vinegar naturally dissolves calcium carbonate without degrading the phenolic resin bonding the pad sheets together. Rinse thoroughly with clean water before reinstalling.

5

Deep-Clean the Sump Basin & Pump Impeller

Wipe down the bottom plastic or stainless-steel reservoir with mild detergent. Unclip the submersible water pump, remove the foam intake filter, and rinse the impeller chamber to ensure free rotation without hair or lint obstructions.

Preventing Odors: Water Treatment in Tropical Climates

A foul, swampy odor from an evaporative cooler is never “normal”—it is a direct sign of bacteriological growth or stagnant water. To keep discharge air fresh, crisp, and hygienic:

  • Enable Automatic Water Purge Cycles: Modern industrial rooftop units supplied by Kpacific feature automated timed solenoid drain valves that dump sump water every 4 to 8 hours and refill with fresh tap water, preventing mineral concentration.
  • Run Fan-Only Dry Cycles: Before shutting down equipment at the end of the day or weekend, turn off the water pump and let the fan run on high for 15–20 minutes. Drying the honeycomb pads completely inhibits fungal and mildew growth.
  • Use Safe Water Conditioning Tablets: Non-corrosive, slow-dissolving zinc or quat-based treatment tablets placed in the sump water basin inhibit algae formation without corroding aluminum fan blades or plastic fittings.

Motor, Water Pump & Float Valve Inspection

While servicing pads, conduct this 3-point mechanical inspection:

Component What to Check Correct Operating State
Submersible Pump Water delivery tubes and distributor manifold Even water trickling across all pad surfaces without dry streaks
Mechanical Float Valve Pivot arm, rubber gasket seal, water shutoff level Water stops 1 inch below the overflow pipe; zero continuous dripping
Fan Motor & Blade Bearing noise, vibration, blade alignment Smooth whisper-quiet rotation, zero wobble, secure shaft set-screws

Industrial Cooler Maintenance Schedule

To keep your facility cooling equipment operating at peak efficiency throughout the year, establish this preventative cadence:

Frequency Key Maintenance Tasks Estimated Time
Daily / Shift Start Verify water supply pressure, check for even pad saturation, listen for motor bearing anomalies 2 minutes
Weekly Inspect sump water clarity, flush debris from drain valve, clean pump intake screen 10 minutes
Monthly Remove and flush honeycomb pads, deep scrub sump tank, check float valve level 30 minutes
Annual Major Overhaul Full chemical descaling or pad replacement, motor electrical insulation test, duct sanitize 2 hours / unit

If your pads are brittle, crumbling, or heavily clogged past cleaning recovery, review our genuine replacement evaporative cooling pads and spare parts.
